The peanut butter recall discussed in part-one of this three-part series serves as a gateway to a more insidious threat: not just visible contaminants or bacterial invaders, but invisible "forever chemicals (PFAS)" that persist in our bodies and environment indefinitely.
Enter the Simply Orange Juice lawsuit, a class-action battle exposing how even seemingly wholesome products can harbor toxins. Filed by Joseph Lurenz in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, the suit alleges that Coca-Cola's Simply Tropical and other juices contain per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) at levels "hundreds of times" above federal advisory limits for drinking water, despite bold "all-natural" claims on the packaging.
"In reality, testing has revealed that the product contains PFAS, a category of synthetic chemicals that are, by definition, not natural," the complaint states. Independent tests detected PFOA and PFOS, two notorious PFAS compounds phased out in the U.S. but lingering in supply chains, at concentrations far exceeding EPA guidelines. "The suit said third-party testing found PFOA and PFOS, two of the most dangerous compounds," reports The Guardian. Exposure to PFAS is linked to cancer, reproductive issues, liver disease, and immune system suppression, as noted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The case of forever chemical contamination
The case, initially dismissed for lack of standing, was refiled in July 2024 with expanded testing of varieties, including Simply Orange with Mango, revealing "widespread and uniform contamination."

This PFAS scandal intersects with E. coli's rampage in other foods. In 2025, Twin Sisters Creamery recalled aged cheeses contaminated with E. coli, hospitalizing several people in Washington State. "Outbreak of E. coli Infections Linked to Twin Sisters Creamery Aged Raw Milk Cheese," the DOH reported. Similarly, Pillsbury Pizza Pops in Canada were linked to an E. coli O26 outbreak that sickened 29 people and resulted in 7 hospitalizations. "People became sick between early October 2025 and early January 2026," per Health Canada.
Food contamination on a broader scale
Broader outbreaks reveal systemic risks. The McDonald's Quarter Pounder E. coli incident in 2024, linked to onions from Taylor Farms, infected 104, hospitalized 34, and killed one. Expert Scott Faber of the Environmental Working Group said: "Our food supply is not as safe as it was even five years ago."
Testimonials amplify the urgency. @Jodytobin3, on the X platform, recounted: "I just spent the last week in the hospital with E. coli food poisoning. I got out on Valentine's Day." These voices humanize statistics: the CDC estimates that 48 million illnesses, 128,000 hospitalizations, and 3,000 deaths occur each year from foodborne pathogens.
PFAS extends the threat beyond bacteria. A global study found 61 unauthorized PFAS in food packaging that migrated into meals. "There’s an incredible body of scientific evidence linking these chemicals to health harms," says David Andrews of the Environmental Working Group. The FDA's phase-out of PFAS in grease-proofing agents is progress, but contamination persists.
This series reveals a food system under siege. From plastic in peanut butter to E. coli in beef and PFAS in juice, the call is clear: demand transparency, stricter regulations, and accountability. As Schaffner notes, "The U.S. food supply is 'one of the safest in the world' and ranked 'joint first for the food safety indicator in 2022.'" Yet, with deaths rising, is that enough?
How to protect yourself from food contamination
As a reminder, here’s how you can protect yourselves, wellness warriors. I recommend checking the FDA’s recall list at least once a week and making it a habit to glance over packaging for damage or strange smells before eating. A simple step like thoroughly washing all fresh produce, even pre-cut or bagged products, can dramatically lower your risk of bacteria like E. coli and Listeria.
Until systemic reforms take hold, vigilance remains our best defense against these hidden hazards.
