Magnesium: The Mineral Transforming Lives
Magnesium, an unsung hero, fuels over 300 bodily reactions, from heart health to stress relief. Magnesium expert, Natalie Jurado, founder of Rooted In, found freedom from anxiety, insomnia, and pain through topical magnesium. “It transformed my life,” she says, inspiring her mission to share this mineral’s power. Cardiologist Dr. Jack Wolfson calls magnesium “essential for heart health,” helping regulate rhythms, blood sugar, and reduce inflammation. Up to 80% of people may be deficient, facing issues like depression, migraines, insomnia, or muscle cramps. For women over 40, magnesium eases menopause symptoms, boosts energy, and supports bones. Choosing the correct type of magnesium matters. Real stories, Natalie’s and mine, highlight its impact. Dive into magnesium’s science and practical tips to unlock a vibrant, healthier you. Join us to explore this game-changing mineral.

Natalie Jurado is the founder of Rooted In, a line of therapeutic magnesium infused moisturizers that actively calm and relax your mood. She is a sought after thought leader, educator and speaker and has worked at the forefront of the wellness industry for over 8 years. She’s considered an expert in all things magnesium and her mission is to spread awareness of this powerful mineral to all who struggle to live their most vibrant lives.

Cardiologists also praise magnesium’s ability to regulate mild heart rhythm irregularities, often as an alternative to beta blockers.

I have firsthand experience with this health challenge. After feeling mild heart palpitations three years ago, I had to wear a heart monitor. Initially, the first cariologist gaslit me over my complaints of chronic fatigue, inexplicably gaining 40 pounds despite eating a healthy diet and a daily exercise routine. I was also a sponsored adventure sports athlete, unable to do the sports I love.

One doctor suggested that I embrace body positivity and reassured me that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. Another suggested that I have gender dysphoria. A third doctor diagnosed me with vocal cord dysfunction. And the medication and therapies for that helped some. But it wasn’t until a new doctor ordered a second heart monitor, checked my magnesium levels, and referred me to a new cardiologist that I found real help. But not from a beta blocker. Instead, two cardiologists recommended magnesium to correct my mild irregular heart rhythm. Not only did the heart palpitations stop after 24 hours on magnesium, but I saw similar improvements to Natalie’s.

The Power of Magnesium

Magnesium is a powerhouse mineral, driving over 300 biochemical reactions in the body including those that impact:

  • Heart rhythm
  • Blood pressure
  • Artery structure
  • Muscle function
  • Cellular energy

The heart health benefits of magnesium include but are not limited to:

  • Preventing arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats such as atrial fibrillation)
  • Keeping blood vessels healthy
  • Supporting normal blood vessel dilation and contraction
  • Helping to reduce damage to the heart from oxidative stress
  • Boosting the good HDL cholesterol
  • Protecting against Type 2 Diabetes
  • Anti-inflammatory action

It also supports muscle recovery, heart health, and mental clarity. Dr. Carolyn Dean, author of The Magnesium Miracle, explains, “Magnesium is vital for every system in the body, from blood sugar regulation to nerve function.” Yet, up to 80% of people may be deficient, leading to symptoms like anxiety, depression, insomnia, and muscle cramps.

A personal transformation from magnesium

“70% to 80% of people aren’t getting enough magnesium every day in their diet. Of the 34 symptoms of menopause, those are associated with magnesium deficiency.”

Natalie Jurado - Founder Rooted In

Natalie’s journey began with frustration. Despite a healthy lifestyle, organic foods, regular exercise, and nontoxic products, she faced crippling health issues.

“I was constantly anxious, stressed, and overwhelmed,” she recalls. Doctors offered prescription meds, but Natalie sought a natural solution. After spending thousands of dollars and years researching, she discovered magnesium.

“I started using it daily on my skin, and my life changed. I felt calm, energized, and slept through the night,” she says. Her experience inspired Rooted In, a brand dedicated to helping others reclaim their vitality.

The science behind magnesium

Magnesium’s role is vast. It aids in energy production, DNA repair, and stress management. Dr. Colin Zhu, a lifestyle medicine doctor, notes, “Magnesium is crucial for muscle contractions, heart function, and even mood regulation.” Deficiency is linked to serious issues like heart disease, migraines, and depression. A 2020 study highlights how magnesium deficiency and stress create a vicious cycle, increasing health risks over time.

For women over 40, magnesium is especially critical. “Of the 34 commonly recognized menopause symptoms, magnesium can help address every single one,” Natalie explains. It regulates hormones like estrogen and progesterone, supports bone density by activating vitamin D, and eases fatigue. Magnesium malate, for instance, is often recommended for chronic fatigue and muscle pain, particularly during hormonal shifts.

Choosing the Right Magnesium

Navigating magnesium supplements can be daunting. Different forms serve unique purposes. According to Dr. Jack Wolfson, here’s what you can expect from the various forms of magnesium:

  • Magnesium Malate consists of magnesium combined with elemental malic acid. This type of magnesium is well absorbed and supports energy levels. Malic acid supports energy production in cells and aids in detoxing heavy metals from the body. It’s a highly bioavailable form to support blood pressure, heart rhythm, inflammation and nerve function.
  • Magnesium Citrate is magnesium bound to citric acid. It has a high absorption level. It’s good for sleep and heart muscle relaxation. It aids in supporting digestion and improving constipation. It’s also highly bioavailable to support blood pressure, heart rhythm and the heart muscle.
  • Magnesium Taurinate consists of magnesium and the amino acid taurine. It’s highly bioavailable to the cells. This form is exceptional for the heart as both the magnesium and taurine can improve the function of the heart muscle. This form can increase ATP (energy) production in the cell, which protects the heart muscle. This type also reduces blood pressure and increases insulin sensitivity, further protecting the heart.
  • Magnesium Bisglycinate consists of magnesium and the amino acid glycine. It has a high absorption rate. It’s also good for sleep and muscle relaxation. It has a calming effect on the nervous system. This type has a non-laxative effect. Due to its high absorption level, it’s helpful in regulating blood pressure, heart rhythms and the cellular activity of the heart muscle.
  • Magnesium Orotate is a compound made up of magnesium and orotic acid. This is one of the most effective forms of magnesium for heart health. This form can actually penetrate cell membranes and deliver magnesium to the innermost compartments of the cells. It’s needed for heart health as it can deliver magnesium to these cells and help with heart tissue recovery. It is also the best way to reverse magnesium deficiencies. Together, all five of these forms work to support the electrical activity of the heart and aid in normal blood pressure regulation.

However, not all forms are equal. Experts warn against magnesium oxide due to poor absorption. Natalie advises, “Break up oral doses throughout the day to avoid digestive issues and apply topical magnesium five minutes before bed for targeted relief.”

Testing for deficiency is tricky. Standard blood tests only measure 0.5% of the body’s magnesium, stored in blood, while most resides in bones and tissues. Natalie suggests a magnesium RBC test for a more accurate picture and correlating results with symptoms like muscle cramps or fatigue.

How to boost your magnesium

Diet is a great start. Magnesium-rich foods include leafy greens, nuts, seeds, whole grains, and dark chocolate. However, modern farming practices deplete soil magnesium, reducing it in foods. Supplements or topical products can bridge the gap. “Consistency matters,” Natalie says. “Incorporate magnesium daily for the best results.”
